“If you’re a travel journalist, does that mean you’ve come here to write about us?”
“Yes, as a matter of fact I’ll be writing about everything that happens on this cruise.”
A woman in the front row wrinkles her brow at me. “So that means you’re kind of like the Talosians from ‘The Menagerie,’” she says.
“Talosians?”
“Yes, the Talosians,” she says. She gazes at me for a beat. “You’ve come to observe our behavior like we were animals in a zoo.”
I give the woman a neutral look; I’m not sure what she’s talking about.
“Season one, episode 11,” the guy in the back offers. “Original series.”
“I guess I didn’t see that one,” I say finally.
Fifty or so people stare at me with a mixture of pity and disbelief: It’s as if I just told them I’ve never seen a sunrise.
First in a 5-part series at World Hum.

A small--but crucial--glitch made my old copy of iMovie almost unworkable for what I hoped to do with it today. And with a client expecting a rough-cut of a video tomorrow, I had to jump to iMovie '09 to get it done.
It turns out the new version wasn't as bad as I'd feared. '08, the version that enraged users so much that Apple posted the previous version to mollify us, has been replaced by a much-improved '09 and I am really starting to see the benefits. After I'd gotten my project squared away for the night, I played around with the new version of iMovie and edited this short little video together from the 4th of July Parade on Madeline Island, WI. It was surprisingly quick, and well-suited to my purpose: find a few short clips, throw them together, and put a song under it. (The song, by the way, is the Madeline Island song which is sung by the crowd every year right after the parade. I'd only heard it before sitting down to edit this, but it still was able to get in my head, so be warned.) So here's my movie. Lots of sun and fun from the ol' Midwest.Mary and I will be back on Madeline this New Years Eve, two years to the day after I proposed there. We'll spend Christmas with Mary's family in St. Louis and then head north for Lake Superior.Comments [0]
So yesterday, we left South Lake Tahoe at 9:45 am. And we drove. And we drove. And we drove.
And at 11:15 pm, we arrived at home!According to Google, it was a 774-mile day. Our route took us along the east side of the lake, through Reno, and then into the Lassen National Forest, which was most definitely a highlight and a beautiful route. From there we met up with I-5 in Shasta and ... and the rest was just straight north. It was a long day, but worth it to sleep in our own bed, and not have to wake up to a drive today.Glad to be home!I spent most of today getting back into the work world, which included the long process of restoring my laptop after it got a new hard drive installed. In truth, it's never been as easy, thanks to MobileMe, Sugarsync, and Gmail. MobileMe had all my contacts and settings saved, Sugarsync has documents, and Gmail has the stored license numbers and passwords I need when I re-downloaded software. I'm back up and running with a fully-functioning laptop. Feels pretty great!Comments [0]
This wasn't supposed to be a snow cabin ... In fact it was a gorgeous fall day when we arrived.
Now we've got a drive ahead of us. Our aim today is Eugene or Salem and we'll drive the rest of the way back to T-Town on Monday.Comments [0]
Tahoe is surprisingly pretty and very blue (although that doesn't show well intgis picture)
You can see the casinos on the Nevada side in the picture.Comments [0]
